Maybury Aids J. Polep in Facility Expansion

These Hytrol conveyors
were engineered for use in
a harsh -20 degree environment |
J. Polep Distribution Services provides products to more than 4,000 chain and independent convenience store retailers in six New England states and New York. To accommodate the growth in the volume of products handled, the company recently expanded their Chicopee, Massachusetts facility with a 12,000 square foot addition containing a -20 degree F freezer. To receive the maximum product storage and handling efficiency from this new addition, J. Polep contacted Maybury Material Handling to design a storage and pick module that includes a three-level mezzanine with pallet flow lanes, carton flow lanes and shelving to accommodate a varied range of products in the freezer.
All the equipment had to be designed to exist and operate in a harsh -20 degree F environment. For example, special drives and lubricants were incorporated into the automated conveying system. The Crown reach trucks received freezer conditioning which includes low-temperature fluids, stainless steel components and special weathertight seals.
This project was undertaken to accommodate significant growth in J. Polep's refrigerated and frozen food offerings. Existing cooler and freezer space was filled to capacity with an ever-expanding range of products, including freshly prepared sandwiches and, most recently, ice cream. The new freezer now handles all frozen products and has room for growth, while the old freezer space has been converted into cooler space.

Serco Dock Levelers keep
docks clean and safe |
|
Maybury's primary goal in the design was to maintain temperature to ensure food quality and freshness. The conveyor system and high-speed doors were essential to meet that goal. The final layout allows product to flow smoothly and the integrity of the freezer to be maintained. Products picked on each of the first two levels are placed on automated conveyors and are moved out of the freezer onto a mezzanine on the refrigerated loading dock. Here, they are palletized and loaded onto trucks. Conveyors in the freezer provide accumulation space where orders can be staged before they are palletized. The use of Interlake shelving allows for positive carton flow - the product flows from the rear to the front so the items are constantly rotated and are accessible when needed.

12' high-speed roll up doors by Dynaco |
The Hytrol Accumulation, Incline and Gravity Roll Conveyors in the freezer area were designed with low-temperature bearings, motors and oils to ensure reliable, consistent operation in the continuous sub-zero conditions. The freezer area is accessed through three high-speed roll-up Dynaco Doors. These doors open to a full 12' height and are controlled by motion-detecting radar. Sensors detect the arrival and departure of the trucks, appropriately timing opening and closing to minimize cold loss. The doors are equipped with a soft bottom edge and will automatically reverse direction if anything comes in contact with them. When closed, a tight seal is formed around all four sides; the soft bottom edge molds to the floor. Additionally, Dynaco Doors withstand fork truck impact and are crash forgiving - downtime and loss of productivity are prevented due to their self-repair feature.

J. Polep loading docks fitted
with Serco Snap-back Dock Shelters for a tight, safe seal between building and truck |
|
Crown RR5220-45 freezer-conditioned reach trucks, with a lift up to 300", maneuver stock and put away pallets. These trucks are ideal for the space, as their low-profile power unit, clear view mast, low-profile chassis and side stance position provide maximum visibility for safety and productivity in the cold conditions. These 4,500 lb. capacity narrow aisle trucks enable
J. Polep to maximize the cubic capacity of the new space.
In addition to ensuring the integrity of the freezer, safety while unloading and loading the trucks is of utmost importance for both the drivers and workers. Management of the freezer and dock operations is directed from an insulated Starrco Modular Office on the refrigerator dock. This insulated structure provides a central point for supervision, flow of product, etc.
Safety at the loading dock was achieved with levelers, restraints and insulated powered overhead doors, all managed through integrated master control panels at each dock position. The trucks back up to the bay doors and nothing will open until the truck is properly restrained. The operator cannot enter the truck until the truck is secure, the overhead door is open, the snap-back dock shelter is engaged and the dock leveler is down. The communication lights indicate when it's a "go."
Serco Vertical Dock Levelers were chosen because of their clean, energy efficient design which includes a patented hinged-bottom draft pad. They effectively control air infiltration for environmental control, safety and cleanliness in the food-handling environment. When the bay doors are closed, the levelers stand up straight and are invisible from the outside. This design provides a tighter seal between the two disparate environments.

|
The loading docks were further fitted with non-impact, low-profile Serco Vehicle Restraints to add to the safe operation. They tightly lock the trailer's rear impact guard to prevent premature departure and trailer creep. Serco Snap-back Dock Shelters seal the trucks to the building, making the trailer an extension of the loading area and providing full trailer access to the workers.
Maybury worked very closely with J. Polep's contractor to coordinate the design, engineering and installation of the project to provide the most efficient design and execution possible. Maybury made sure that the final result was efficient, safe, productive, energy efficient and environmentally sound.

Why do our customers RENT
material handling equipment?
Mark McCormick of our Rental Department has listed some of the reasons:
- Some have equipment that is down for servicing, and they need a quick, temporary solution.
- Renting is a popular option with seasonal industries during peak business periods. For example, the food service industry is busier in summer, whereas manufacturing peaks in the fall.
- Companies that are moving often require temporary equipment to assist with the transition.
- Some renters simply don't want the hassles of ownership. Such long-term renters enjoy paying a flat rate, without worrying about maintenance headaches. (And Maybury offers discounts on long-term rentals!)
- Maybury offers flexible rental options – equipment may be rented by the day, week, month, or indefinitely.
- Maybury offers a large selection of vehicles for rental, including Pallet Jacks, Stock Pickers, Reach Trucks, Scissor Lifts and Counterbalanced Trucks, as well as Cleaning Equipment such as Floor Sweepers and Scrubbers.
- Maybury's Rental Department stocks a well-maintained fleet of mostly current models, all serviced in-house by Maybury's trained service technicians.

Although many companies have recently adopted GPS technology to keep track of drivers on the road,
Maybury Material Handling has pushed this
technological trend even further, with the addition of computer tablets for every service technician.
In addition to vehicle tracking, Maybury can now access particular service history, look up parts in transit and even deliver Internet access to technicians!
Maybury implemented a system of GPS tracking devices and electronic tablets in December, 2006. Our goal was to maximize service availability and minimize travel time. With 1200 service calls per month, efficiency is critically important to the Maybury Service Department.
 |
|
Maybury service vehicles are
connected to GPS,
the Internet, and
Maybury's service coordinator |
|
The service coordinators can monitor the speed and location of every service vehicle on the road, so they can keep tabs on safety and efficiency. Each service technician uses an electronic tablet, which displays service orders and accepts a customer's electronic signature. The tablets provide Internet, as well as intranet, access.
A technician can bring up the maintenance history of any vehicle they are servicing, look up parts in Maybury's inventory and access useful information such as wiring diagrams. When a technician needs a certain part, they can look up every location of that part in the database. The technician will then know if a Maybury truck carrying that specific part is traveling nearby and can arrange pickup in the most efficient way possible.
Billing is now done by email, another efficiency-booster. However, Maybury service trucks are also equipped with printers, so if a customer prefers a paper statement, the technician can print one out directly from the tablet!
It has been twelve months since Maybury implemented this new technology. We have found that it has helped us to successfully combat rising fuel costs, while increasing communication within the Service Department.
