FLEXcon and Maybury—
A Cohesive Bond
Heavy-duty pallet rack in FLEXcon's Nebraska facility stores raw materials and finished goods.
Maybury Material Handling has worked with FLEXcon Company, Inc. for over 15 years, providing them with a wide range of material handling products and solutions. Located in Spencer, MA, FLEXcon is one of the world's leading manufacturers of pressure-sensitive films and adhesives, offering the largest selection of made-to-order and standard off-the-shelf products in the industry. For more than 45 yrs, FLEXcon's products have been used in a wide array of applications ranging from product identification labels, P-O-P and promotional graphics, novelty/stickers and decals, to bonding and mounting.

Throughout their 15-year partnership, both FLEXcon and Maybury have experienced significant growth—each expanding their product lines, personnel and facilities. Coincidentally, each company grew its roots from very modest beginnings. FLEXcon started as a small garage-based business, while Maybury Material Handling began in the basement of the Maybury home. Since Maybury began working with them, FLEXcon has added four additional manufacturing plants to their corporate headquarters in Spencer, MA (for a total of six facilities). They also have other domestic manufacturing facilities located in Nebraska and Minnesota, and a European facility in Glenrothes, Scotland.

Over the years, Maybury has developed a solid working relationship with FLEXcon, supplying them with many material handling products, from hand trucks to mezzanines. Dick Southworth, Maybury Account Manager, has remained the sales contact for FLEXcon from the very beginning. For several years, Dick has worked closely with Ed Allie, FLEXcon's Director of Engineering and Maintenance, and Bob Foskitt, FLEXcon's Project Engineer, to provide them with equipment specifically designed for their products. Ed Allie commented, "Maybury Material Handling is one of our best suppliers. We rely on Maybury to provide the right components for FLEXcon's needs."

Custom-designed Interlake pallet rack was installed in FLEXcon's Spencer, MA facility.
Throughout FLEXcon's Spencer and Nebraska facilities are aisles of specialized heavy-duty pallet rack, which were installed by Maybury's Installation Team. The rack provides high bay storage for FLEXcon's raw materials and finished products that await shipment to customers. Recently, Maybury worked with Interlake Material Handling to custom-design pallet rack that integrates with FLEXcon's existing rack in their Spencer facility.

Jay Mercadante, Maybury's Systems Engineering Manager, worked with Bob Foskitt to design mezzanines for FLEXcon's facilities. FLEXcon uses Maybury Mezzanines for office areas and storage for their supplies. All of FLEXcon's in-plant offices are constructed on mezzanines, which maximizes available floor space. The storage mezzanines, which have poly-coated decking for increased durability, hold supplies that are used in manufacturing.

Maybury has also installed chain-driven live roller conveyors, belt conveyors and ball transfer tables for FLEXcon. The conveyor systems are used to transport FLEXcon's finished goods to be strapped and stretch-wrapped.

After viewing a demo of Serco vehicle restraints at a Maybury Open House, FLEXcon chose to order the restraints for their Nebraska facility. Since then, Maybury has installed several vehicle restraints in FLEXcon's Spencer facility. These restraints prevent trailer trucks from rolling or pulling away from the loading docks, thereby creating a safer environment for loading and unloading.

One reason FLEXcon and Maybury have worked so well together over the years is because of their mutual dedication and commitment to safety. Both companies have strict safety policies, which all employees are required to follow. Maybury Installers attend Maybury's own safety training programs, as well as FLEXcon's site-specific safety training for contractors.

Bob Foskitt stated, "FLEXcon is always improving on the safety practices and safety training for the outside contractors that we employ. Maybury has easily met our standards under the FLEXcon Contractor Safety Program. The Installation crews have followed our safety and security requirements without incident."

Maybury has enjoyed working with the FLEXcon Team and looks forward to our continued partnership for years to come.

Maybury Receives Pioneer Valley
Business Excellence Award
On October 8th, Maybury Material Handling was honored at the Springfield Area Council for Excellence’s (SPACE) 4th Annual Pioneer Valley Business Excellence Award Celebration and Recognition Luncheon. Maybury was awarded the 2002 Pioneer Valley Business Excellence Award in Manufacturing. The Pioneer Valley Business Excellence Award (PVBEA) is modeled after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the Massachusetts Excellence Award. The purpose of the PVBEA is to recognize Pioneer Valley organizations that distinguish themselves through their efforts and achievements in six different business criteria: customer satisfaction, process improvement, leadership, human resources, business results and information sharing. Two awards are given: one for Manufacturing organizations and one for Service organizations.

John Maybury accepts the 2002 PVBE Award for Manufacturing.
Applying for the PVBEA was a three-phase process. The first phase required Maybury to submit a written application, which included responses to 20 specific criteria questions. In the second phase, a team of examiners assessed and ranked the application responses using a point matrix. Based upon the total points accumulated, the top three organizations in each business category (Manufacturing and Service) were chosen as finalists and advanced to Phase Three. This last phase included a one-day site visit by designated examiners in order to further review and clarify the answers to the application questions. After interviewing employees and evaluating business processes, examiners re-scored each of the finalists using the same point matrix as in Phase Two. Based upon the total points accumulated in Phase Three, the top organization in each category was chosen as the recipient of the Pioneer Valley Business Excellence Award.

Maybury Material Handling was excited and honored to be the recipient of this award. John Maybury, President, stated, “We feel that this achievement is a reflection of our continuous improvement efforts and our commitment towards business excellence. Receiving this award is just one step towards our goal of becoming a world class organization and a Malcolm Baldrige award-winning company.”
