Project
Sunburst at Mohegan Sun

In
1999, Mohegan Sun Casino, one of the premier gaming facilities in
the Northeast, embarked on a one billion dollar expansion, known
as Project Sunburst, that would help triple the size of its existing
facility. Thirty-one months later, and one week ahead of schedule,
the second tallest structure in Connecticut was sitting on the banks
of the Thames River in Uncasville. When the dust had finally settled,
Mohegan Sun's new developments included a 10,000-seat arena, twelve
new restaurants, thirty retail shops, a 34-story hotel, and an additional
115,000 square feet of gaming area, known as Casino of the Sky.
In September 2001, Mohegan Sun unveiled Phase One, which included the opening of the new Casino, the arena, and most of the retail shops and restaurants. Phase Two was revealed in April 2002, and included a 34-story, 1,200-room hotel. With only 16,800 square feet of new warehouse space available for storing food and supplies for these additional facilities, it was necessary to maximize its use. Mohegan Sun contacted Maybury Material Handling for help with designing an efficient warehouse layout and supplying the necessary equipment for the warehouse. Chris Nagle, Maybury's Account Manager, worked with Jay Mercadante, Maybury's Systems Engineering Manager, and used blueprints supplied by Mohegan Sun contractors to design the most space efficient layout based on the storage area, size, and shape of the Sky Food Storage Warehouse. Maybury worked with Lenny Schafer, Mohegan's Director of Warehouse Operations, and Neil Robinson, Mohegan's Sky Food Storeroom Manager, to furnish the warehouse with the necessary equipment for storing food and supplies for the new facilities within the Casino of the Sky.
Mohegan Sun also needed various types of shelving in the storage areas for its Accounting, Retail, Marketing, Housekeeping and Information Systems Departments. Maybury Material Handling supplied Mohegan with the rugged and easy-to-install Interlake Quick Assembly Rack. This rack is lightweight and has a high storage capacity, while offering flexibility to change and relocate shelving with minimal effort. Maybury
coupled Interlake's wide range of pallet and product flow racking
with Crown's rugged
lift equipment, to provide Mohegan Sun with a modern, efficient, low maintenance food storage warehouse. Maybury supplied Mohegan Sun with several Crown trucks for loading, unloading, and stacking pallets in the Sky Food Warehouse. The Crown WP 2000 walkie pallet truck and PE 3000 rider pallet trucks are used for loading and unloading the delivery trucks at the shipping/receiving docks, staging pallets, low-level order picking, and maneuvering in tight areas around the warehouse. The Crown SC 4000 three-wheel, rider counterbalanced trucks are ideal for precision load placement in the tighter spaces around Mohegan's warehouse. Mohegan also uses Crown's 20 MT walkie stackers, which are cost efficient trucks that load the pallets onto the racks in extremely confined storage spaces. Lenny Schafer was pleased with the Crown equipment and stated, "The Crown trucks are much more reliable and dependable than other competitive trucks I used when I worked in Atlantic City." Maybury also supplied Interlake pallet rack and Crown trucks for Mohegan Sun's Warehouse Three, a separate warehouse on the premises. Warehouse Three is primarily used for Mohegan Sun's hotel storage. Along with the same Crown trucks used in the Sky Food Warehouse, Maybury supplied a Crown SP 3000 stockpicker for Warehouse Three, which is used for picking and hand selecting products from the racks.
Equipment
was also needed for moving and cleaning items inside some of the
casino facilities. Maybury supplied Mohegan Sun's arena staff
with Kalmar AC's C100, 10,000-pound cushion tire, propane lift
truck. The Kalmar AC C100 is used for moving the 8,000-pound bleachers
within the 10,000-seat arena. To help clean the hard to reach
places in the casino, Maybury provided an Upright AB38N Self Propelled
Boom Lift. The Upright has a 43-foot, 7-inch maximum working height
and an 18-foot, 4-inch horizontal outreach. The one-hand proportional
joystick controls the compact dimension of the lift, which is
just 4 feet, 11 inches wide. The solid puncture-proof tires on
the Upright allows it to be used outdoors, as well as indoors
without leaving marks on the casino floors.
Mohegan Sun's world-class hotel and gaming areas, coupled with its exquisite shops and four star restaurants, provide its customers with the ultimate resort experience. To provide such an experience requires a tremendous behind the scenes effort by casino management and staff. Mohegan Sun relies on its suppliers for the support they need to maintain their high standard of customer excellence. Maybury is pleased to be a part of Mohegan Sun's growth. These improvements allow the average operator to see 25% more fork area than on competitive trucks. Operator
entry and exit is aided by one of the lowest step heights of any
truck in its class. Compared to its leading competitor, the FC compartment
offers more head, knee, and shoulder clearance. An exclusive transverse
mounted 11.4" diameter drive motor is powerful, easy to service
and is located high above the floor away from dirt and moisture.
The truck frame, mast, drive unit, and steer axle are proven rugged
and reliable and tested for durability. When servicie is required,
the new InfoPoint quick reference guide is used to help technicians
locate components, reducing downtime.
